2 Ways To Get Rid Of Skunks

Posted on

Skunks are kind of cute when you look at them. They waddle when they are walking, and the stripes on the skunk are nifty to look at. However, they don't smell as good. They also tend to be kind of grumpy, which makes them more likely to spray at whatever scares them, and that can be you or your pets. If a skunk family takes up residence in your house, you will probably want to get rid of it as soon as possible because skunks don't generally make the best roommates. So, how can you get rid of them?

Throw Some Light on the Situation

Skunks don't like the light. They are going to want to sneak around in the dark so that no one knows that they are around and that they are safe. So, if you add in some lights outside your house, it will make it harder for them to get around without being seen. There are several ways you can add in lights. One is that you can get motion detecting security lights and install them on the outside of your house. Some of those are run on battery power so you don't have to hardwire them into your electrical outlet. Another option is to use things like outdoor solar lights. They turn on when it gets dark, and since they have solar panels, you don't need to worry about powering them. You can just put those around the house and your walkways, and they will help to discourage the skunks.

Use Cayenne Pepper

Another thing you can do is to boil some cayenne pepper in water. When it has been boiled down and become more concentrated, strain it out, and then put it in a spray bottle. If you use whole, fresh cayenne peppers, you are going to get a very strong mixture. You may want to use some kind of mask while you are boiling it down, and you will want to use gloves while you are handling the peppers and then the pepper laced water. You want to discourage the skunks, not hurt yourself. When you are done, spray all around your house, especially around where you think the skunks are getting in. If you are going to spray around their den, do it at night since the skunks will be gone. Do not directly spray the skunk. You just want to discourage them. The skunks tend to avoid anything that has been sprayed with this mixture.

If anything you try doesn't get rid of the skunks, it's time to hire a professional. They can use their tools like humane traps to get rid of the skunks and help you seal up where they entered. For additional help, you can read more here.
